It does not act alone; often it forms part of a larger complex that includes components like E2 ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes. The complex activity of RNF185 is essential for cellular quality control mechanisms maintaining balance within the protein environment of the cell.
Pathways
Involvement of RNF185 connects it to important cellular processes including the endoplasmic reticulum-associated degradation (ERAD) pathway and the Wnt signaling pathway. In ERAD RNF185 collaborates with other proteins such as RNF5 to facilitate degradation of misfolded proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum. Through the Wnt pathway control of protein levels by RNF185 influences cellular proliferation and differentiation processes that are essential for proper tissue development and homeostasis.
