The RNF185 and RNF5/NG2 proteins function as E3 ubiquitin ligases which add ubiquitin to substrate proteins and mark them for degradation by the proteasome. Together these proteins play an important role in the endoplasmic reticulum-associated degradation (ERAD) pathway. RNF185 is also known as Ring Finger Protein 185 while RNF5 is often referred to as Ring Finger Protein 5 or NG2 in some contexts. RNF185 has a mass of approximately 34 kDa and RNF5 has a mass of about 22 kDa. These proteins express primarily in tissues such as the heart liver and kidneys participating in cellular quality control and stress responses.

Biological function summary

These ubiquitin ligases mediate protein homeostasis by regulating the turnover of misfolded or damaged proteins through the ubiquitin-proteasome system. They interact with several other proteins to form a complex involved in tagging defective molecules. This complex helps maintain cellular integrity by preventing the accumulation of potentially toxic proteins.
