Supplementary information

RPL23 also known as ribosomal protein L23 is an essential component of the large 60S ribosomal subunit with a molecular mass of approximately 15 kDa. This protein is highly expressed in eukaryotic cells particularly in tissues with high rates of protein synthesis. RPL23 interacts directly with rRNA to facilitate its structural stability and function playing an important role in the assembly of the ribosome and the translation of mRNA into proteins.
Biological function summary

RPL23 contributes to the synthesis of proteins by forming part of the ribosomal complex. Ribosomes are composed of two subunits 40S and 60S in eukaryotes with RPL23 being integral to the larger subunit. The presence of RPL23 ensures that the ribosomes effectively translate the genetic code carried by mRNA into a polypeptide chain. This protein is essential in maintaining the fidelity and efficiency of translation processes within cells determining how cells grow and respond to various stimuli.

Pathways

RPL23 plays a significant role in the translation initiation pathway and the protein synthesis pathway which are important for cell growth and replication. Within these pathways RPL23 associates with other ribosomal proteins such as RPL5 and RPL11 which together modulate the formation of the ribosomal structure and oversee the translation process. The function of RPL23 in these pathways ensures that cellular resources are properly managed and directed towards productive protein synthesis.

Mutations or dysregulation of RPL23 have connections to cancer and Diamond-Blackfan anemia. The alteration in RPL23 can disrupt normal ribosome function leading to impaired protein synthesis and contributing to the uncontrolled cell growth seen in cancers. This protein also interacts with tumor suppressor proteins like TP53 linking its activity to mechanisms that control cell cycle and apoptosis. Furthermore deficiencies in RPL23 function may lead to insufficient production of red blood cells evident in Diamond-Blackfan anemia highlighting a relationship with genes responsible for balanced erythropoiesis.
