RPL24 also known as Ribosomal Protein L24 functions as part of the 60S large ribosomal subunit. It plays an important role in the structural stability and assembly of ribosomes supporting protein synthesis within the cell. RPL24 has a molecular mass of approximately 17 kDa and exhibits high expression in actively dividing cells like those in the bone marrow and the liver. Its expression is important for the efficient production of ribosomal proteins and cellular growth.
The RPL24 protein assists in the translation process by joining with other ribosomal proteins and rRNA components to form the large subunit of the ribosome. It integrates within the ribosome complex ensuring proper alignment of mRNA and tRNA during protein synthesis. RPL24 contributes to the efficiency and accuracy of translating genetic codes into functional proteins which is essential for cellular functioning. It collaborates closely with other ribosomal proteins in translation initiation and elongation processes.
RPL24 plays an integral role in the mTOR signaling pathway which regulates cell growth protein synthesis and metabolism. This pathway heavily relies on functional ribosomes where RPL24 assists in ribosome biogenesis and activity. Another important pathway is the translation initiation pathway where RPL24 works alongside proteins like eIF3 and eIF6 ensuring the proper assembly and function of the ribosome. By participating in these pathways RPL24 supports cellular growth and maintenance.
Improper function or mutation of RPL24 associates with Diamond-Blackfan Anemia a disorder characterized by a failure to produce red blood cells. The disorder links RPL24 to reduced ribosomal function and impaired erythropoiesis. RPL24 also connects to cancers where dysregulation in ribosomal proteins often results in uncontrolled cell growth and proliferation. Mutated ribosomal proteins like those in RPL24 can alter pathways leading to oncogenesis and cancer progression.
