Supplementary information

The ribosomal protein L28 (RPL28) also known as 60S ribosomal protein L28 plays a mechanical role in the formation of ribosomes which are essential for protein synthesis. RPL28 forms part of the large 60S subunit of the ribosome. This protein has a molecular mass of approximately 15-17 kDa and is expressed in various tissues due to its fundamental role in cellular functions. The expression of RPL28 occurs widely but can change in response to cellular activity related to protein production needs.
Biological function summary

RPL28 participates in the assembly and function of ribosomes within the cell. It acts as a structural component of the ribosomal large subunit and therefore helps in the synthesis of proteins by translating mRNA. As part of the ribosomal complex RPL28 ensures the proper alignment of rRNA and tRNA during protein assembly. Its function is integral to the ribosome's role in facilitating correct translation steps needed for cellular protein production.

Pathways

RPL28 has important roles in the protein synthesis (translation) and ribosome biogenesis pathways. It interacts with other ribosomal proteins and factors involved in these pathways. RPL28 coordinates with proteins such as RPL5 and RPL11 which are also involved in the assembly of the large ribosomal subunit and ensure effective translation and synthesis of proteins required by the cell.

Mutations or alterations in RPL28 expression have connections to disorders of ribosome dysfunction known as ribosomopathies. Such conditions may include Diamond-Blackfan Anemia where ribosomal biogenesis is impaired possibly involving other proteins like RPL5. Deficiencies in RPL28 or associated proteins can lead to abnormal ribosome assembly affecting protein synthesis and contributing to disease symptoms.
