Supplementary information

RPL36 also known as Ribosomal Protein L36 is a component of the 60S subunit of the eukaryotic ribosome. This protein has a mass of approximately 12.5 kDa. RPL36 helps in the assembly of ribosomes facilitating protein synthesis in the cell. It is expressed in various tissues including the liver and brain where cell growth and division require robust protein production.
Biological function summary

RPL36 plays an essential role in the synthesis of proteins by participating in ribosome biogenesis. As part of the ribosomal complex it contributes to the formation of the large ribosomal subunit which in collaboration with the small subunit synthesizes proteins from mRNA. This function places RPL36 at the heart of cellular physiology as protein synthesis drives many cellular processes.

Pathways

RPL36 is involved in the cellular process of translation. It is part of the ribosome-mediated mechanism that translates genetic information into proteins. RPL36 associates with other ribosomal proteins like RPL10 and RPL13A within the translational machinery. Additionally it is part of the mTOR signaling pathway which regulates cell growth proliferation and survival in response to nutrient availability and other signals.

RPL36 influences conditions such as Diamond-Blackfan anemia and various cancers. In Diamond-Blackfan anemia mutations affecting ribosomal proteins like RPL36 disrupt normal erythropoiesis leading to bone marrow failure. In cancer changes in ribosomal protein expression including RPL36 may contribute to abnormal protein synthesis and tumor growth. The interplay between RPL36 and other proteins such as RPL5 and RPL11 can impact pathways critical to disease development and progression.
