RPS15A also known as Ribosomal Protein S15a is a critical component of the small 40S ribosomal subunit. It has a molecular mass of approximately 17 kDa. This protein is ubiquitously expressed across various tissues signifying its fundamental role in cellular biology. RPS15A participates in ribosomal assembly where it plays a mechanical role in facilitating mRNA translation and protein synthesis. It is essential for the integrity of ribosomal structure and function ensuring efficient protein production within cells.
Biological function summary

Component of the small ribosomal subunit (PubMed : 23636399). Part of the small subunit (SSU) processome, first precursor of the small eukaryotic ribosomal subunit. During the assembly of the SSU processome in the nucleolus, many ribosome biogenesis factors, an RNA chaperone and ribosomal proteins associate with the nascent pre-rRNA and work in concert to generate RNA folding, modifications, rearrangements and cleavage as well as targeted degradation of pre-ribosomal RNA by the RNA exosome (PubMed : 34516797).
