Target data

Function

Component of the small ribosomal subunit (PubMed:23636399). The ribosome is a large ribonucleoprotein complex responsible for the synthesis of proteins in the cell (PubMed:23636399). Part of the small subunit (SSU) processome, first precursor of the small eukaryotic ribosomal subunit. During the assembly of the SSU processome in the nucleolus, many ribosome biogenesis factors, an RNA chaperone and ribosomal proteins associate with the nascent pre-rRNA and work in concert to generate RNA folding, modifications, rearrangements and cleavage as well as targeted degradation of pre-ribosomal RNA by the RNA exosome (PubMed:34516797).

Activity summary

RPS16 also known as Ribosomal Protein S16 is a component of the 40S ribosomal subunit with a molecular mass of approximately 16.5 kDa. It plays a role in protein synthesis by joining together with other ribosomal proteins and rRNA to form the ribosome's small subunit. RPS16 is expressed in various tissues throughout the human body reflecting its essential role in maintaining protein synthesis machinery.

Biological function summary

The function of this ribosomal protein contributes to the translation process by ensuring the proper assembly and stability of the ribosomal small subunit. RPS16 is part of the ribosomal complex consisting of rRNA and numerous ribosomal proteins that collaborate to decode mRNA into amino acid sequences. This protein ensures the accuracy of translation initiation and elongation vital for efficient cellular function and growth.

Pathways

Ribosomal proteins like RPS16 participate in the translation pathway facilitating mRNA translation and protein synthesis. It plays a significant role in the ribosome biogenesis pathway coordinating with proteins such as RPS18 and RPL5 in the assembly and maturation of ribosomal subunits. These interactions are important for the cellular response to growth signals and metabolic stress.

Associated diseases and disorders

RPS16 shows an association with Diamond-Blackfan Anemia a rare genetic disorder characterized by a failure to produce enough red blood cells. Mutations in genes encoding ribosomal proteins including RPS16 can disrupt ribosome biogenesis impairing erythropoiesis. This protein's abnormalities can also loosely link to certain cancers as ribosomal dysfunction may lead to uncontrolled cell growth and division through altered expression of proteins like c-Myc which regulates ribosome biogenesis.
