RPS21 also known as Ribosomal Protein S21 is a component of the 40S small ribosomal subunit. It has a molecular mass of approximately 9.5 kDa. RPS21 is involved in the assembly and stability of ribosomal RNA. It is mostly expressed in the cytoplasm where it participates in the synthesis of proteins. Its expression levels vary between different cell types with significant presence in cells experiencing high rates of protein synthesis.
Biological function summary

The protein plays an important role as a structural constituent of ribosomes contributing to the translation process. It forms part of the ribosomal protein complex which is essential for ribosome biogenesis and function. The stability and functionality of the ribosomal protein complex rely on the presence of RPS21 affecting the overall efficiency of the protein translation machinery. This process is critical for normal cellular growth and division.

Pathways
