Supplementary information

RPS28 also known as ribosomal protein S28 is a component of the 40S subunit of the ribosome. The protein has a molecular mass of about 7.6 kDa and is part of the S28E family of ribosomal proteins. RPS28 is highly expressed in various tissues reflecting its importance in cells that are actively synthesizing proteins. This protein plays a mechanical role in ribosome function by participating in the assembly of ribosomal structures and facilitating translation.
Biological function summary

Ribosomal proteins like RPS28 are essential for protein biosynthesis. RPS28 is a part of the ribosomal small subunit complex which helps decode messenger RNA (mRNA) into polypeptides. Proper functioning of the ribosome ensures the accurate translation of genetic material into proteins which is necessary for cell growth and maintenance. The protein cooperates with other ribosomal proteins to maintain the integrity and functionality of the ribosomal machinery.

Pathways

RPS28 is involved in the translation pathway which is critical for gene expression. It contributes to the initiation phase of translation working alongside the eukaryotic initiation factor 3 (eIF3) complex. The protein also plays a role in the maturation of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) within the ribosome biogenesis pathway. Through these pathways RPS28 interacts with other ribosomal proteins such as RPS15 and RPS23 which are essential for the assembly and function of the ribosome.

Mutations in RPS28 have been linked to Diamond-Blackfan anemia a rare genetic condition characterized by bone marrow failure and anemia. This disorder demonstrates the protein's importance in hematopoiesis and red blood cell production. Additionally researchers are examining connections between RPS28 and its interaction with the p53 pathway given p53's role in tumor suppression and the DNA damage response suggesting potential implications in certain cancers. Understanding these interactions may contribute to better insights into the molecular basis of these diseases and potential therapeutic approaches.

Target data

Component of the small ribosomal subunit (PubMed : 23636399, PubMed : 25901680, PubMed : 25957688). The ribosome is a large ribonucleoprotein complex responsible for the synthesis of proteins in the cell (PubMed : 23636399, PubMed : 25901680, PubMed : 25957688). Part of the small subunit (SSU) processome, first precursor of the small eukaryotic ribosomal subunit. During the assembly of the SSU processome in the nucleolus, many ribosome biogenesis factors, an RNA chaperone and ribosomal proteins associate with the nascent pre-rRNA and work in concert to generate RNA folding, modifications, rearrangements and cleavage as well as targeted degradation of pre-ribosomal RNA by the RNA exosome (PubMed : 34516797).
