Supplementary information

The rpsB gene encodes for the 30S ribosomal protein S2 also known as BS6 which is an integral part of the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome. It has a molecular mass of approximately 29 kDa. This protein is expressed in Escherichia coli and other prokaryotic organisms. Mechanically the 30S ribosomal protein S2 binds to rRNA within the 30S subunit and plays a significant role in stabilizing the structure of the ribosome during protein synthesis.
Biological function summary

Protein S2 is one of the essential components of the ribosome. It is not part of any multiprotein complex beyond the ribosome itself. Its main function is to contribute to the accurate translation of mRNA into a polypeptide chain during protein synthesis. This process is fundamental for cell growth and proliferation and any malfunction in 30S ribosomal protein S2 can impact cellular function and maintenance.

Pathways

The protein S2 is important in the translation pathway which is central to the overall process of gene expression. In this pathway it works closely with other ribosomal proteins and ribosomal RNAs to ensure proper translation initiation elongation and termination resulting in effective protein biosynthesis. It functions alongside other proteins like the 50S ribosomal subunit protein L10 to facilitate the assembly and stability of the ribosome.

Defects or mutations in the rpsB gene or the 30S ribosomal protein S2 have been observed to relate to antibiotic resistance in bacterial pathogens. Mutations can lead to disorders in translation accuracy ultimately resulting in resistance to antibiotics such as aminoglycosides. The protein's relationship with other ribosomal proteins such as S12 can further influence the development of antibiotic resistance affecting the treatment of bacterial infections.
