Supplementary information

The RRS1 protein also known as Ribosome Biogenesis Regulatory Protein Homolog has a molecular mass of approximately 25 kDa. RRS1 is found primarily in the nucleolus of the cell where it plays an important role in ribosome assembly. It interacts directly with ribosomal RNA (rRNA) facilitating the synthesis and processing of rRNA. The activity of RRS1 is essential for the proper formation of the 60S ribosomal subunit. This protein is widely expressed across various tissue types reflecting its fundamental role in protein synthesis machinery.
Biological function summary

RRS1 interacts as a part of the ribosome biogenesis machinery in eukaryotic cells. It exists within the pre-ribosomal complex partnering with other ribosomal assembly factors to ensure accurate and efficient ribosome formation. The protein is necessary for the transition of the pre-rRNA from the early to late processing stages an essential step for the maturation of functional ribosomes. Through its interactions RRS1 coordinates the assembly and stability of nascent ribosomal subunits linking it integrally with cellular growth and proliferation.

Pathways

RRS1 functions within the ribosome biogenesis pathway pivotal for synthesizing new proteins required for cell function and growth. It completes a vital role in the assembly line of the ribosomal RNA splicing pathway by working with proteins like RPF2 and Syo1. This involvement secures the fidelity of ribosome construction handling critical transitions from pre-ribosomal RNA to mature ribosomes. The well-orchestrated dance of RRS1 and its associates ensure that cellular protein synthesis machinery operates effectively.

RRS1 has been implicated in conditions related to aberrant ribosome biogenesis and function. Dysregulation of RRS1 can contribute to ribosomopathies disorders characterized by defective ribosome production. Disorders like Diamond-Blackfan anemia have links to such dysfunctions as proper ribosomal assembly is compromised. Moreover RRS1's association with proteins like NOP56 in ribosomal biogenesis implies potential impacts on cancer progression where irregular ribosome production might drive abnormal cell proliferation.
