This protein is part of the sorting and assembly machinery (SAM) complex and is necessary for the insertion of β-barrel proteins into the mitochondrial outer membrane. SAMM50 has a molecular mass of approximately 50 kDa. It is predominantly expressed in tissues with high metabolic activity such as the liver and skeletal muscle where mitochondrial function is essential.
