Supplementary information

SART1 also known as Squamous Cell Carcinoma Antigen Recognized by T-cells 1 or RNA Binding Motif Protein 25 (RBM25) plays an essential role in RNA splicing. This protein has an approximate mass of 110 kDa and is expressed ubiquitously in various tissues with higher levels observed in testis and cancer cells. As part of the spliceosome SART1 helps facilitate the assembly of spliceosomal snRNPs specifically U4/U6-U5 tri-snRNP an important component for proper splicing events.
Biological function summary

SART1 involves itself deeply in the regulation of mRNA maturation and stability. It participates in the spliceosome complex where it contributes to the splicing of precursor-mRNA into mature mRNA which is necessary for accurate gene expression. The presence of SART1 ensures the correct removal of introns from pre-mRNA an essential step for producing functional proteins in cells.

Pathways

The involvement in mRNA splicing positions SART1 within the gene expression pathway. It collaborates with other proteins like SF3A1 and SF3B1 integral to the spliceosome's functioning and it also indirectly influences pathways such as the cell cycle regulation by ensuring accurate gene expression. Disruptions in pathways involving SART1 can lead to erroneous splicing and subsequent protein malfunction.

Disruptions in SART1 expression or function can relate to cancer and autoimmune diseases. Aberrant splicing due to SART1 anomalies contributes to tumorigenesis seen in several forms of cancer including colorectal cancer. Additionally SART1's dysregulation can connect to proteins like PKM where mis-splicing can influence cancer metabolism. It also plays a role in autoimmune conditions as faulty splicing can trigger immune system malfunctions.
