SBSN also known as suprabasin is a protein with a molecular weight of approximately 55 kDa. It plays a mechanical role in maintaining cell adhesion and integrity. SBSN localizes mainly in the epidermis and oral epithelia where it contributes to skin barrier function. In addition its expression appears in other stratified squamous epithelia tissues indicating its general role in epidermal formation and maintenance.
Biological function summary

SBSN contributes to the formation and maintenance of the epithelial barrier. It acts as a component within specialized structures such as desmosomes which are important for cell-cell adhesion in epithelial tissues. The protein works alongside other structural proteins to maintain cellular cohesion and prevent damage from mechanical stress. SBSN interacts with components such as keratin highlighting its integration within the cytoskeletal framework necessary for normal epithelial function.

Pathways

Several cellular processes involve SBSN notably those linked to skin development and repair. It plays a role in the Wnt signaling pathway which is important for skin cell proliferation and differentiation.
