SCARA3 also known as macrophage scavenger receptor 1 is a protein involved in cellular defense mechanisms. It has a molecular mass of approximately 70 kDa and is expressed in various tissues including the liver spleen and lymph nodes. SCARA3 plays a mechanical role in binding and internalizing oxidized low-density lipoproteins (oxLDL) and bacterial components which facilitates the clearance of potentially harmful substances.
SCARA3 contributes to the innate immune response and plays a role in cellular adhesion and scavenging processes. While it does not form part of a larger protein complex SCARA3 acts in concert with other receptors to facilitate the uptake and removal of pathogens and cellular debris. It helps maintain cellular homeostasis and protects against oxidative stress by binding and internalizing agents like oxLDL.
SCARA3 interacts with cellular processes involved in oxidative stress and immune response. It participates in the receptor-mediated endocytosis pathway where it collaborates with proteins like CD36 and SR-A1 for handling modified lipoproteins. Additionally SCARA3 plays a role in the inflammatory response pathways where it modulates activities alongside cytokines and other immune-related proteins to regulate inflammatory processes.
SCARA3 has associations with atherosclerosis and certain inflammatory conditions. In atherosclerosis SCARA3 interacts with oxLDL an important factor in plaque formation and is linked with other proteins like LOX-1 contributing to lipid accumulation and plaque build-up. In inflammatory disorders SCARA3’s role in pathogen clearance and immune modulation indicates its involvement often connecting with cytokine networks that lead to immune system dysregulation.
