Supplementary information

SCRN1 also known as Secernin-1 is a protein involved in endosomal trafficking and lysosomal degradation. It has a molecular mass of approximately 45 kDa. SCRN1 is widely expressed in various tissues including the brain liver and lungs suggesting its involvement in numerous cellular processes. It is known to regulate the fusion of endosomes with lysosomes ensuring the proper degradation of internalized materials.
Biological function summary

SCRN1 acts as a regulatory component facilitating vesicle-mediated transport and protein degradation. This ensures cellular homeostasis and response to extracellular stimuli. Although SCRN1 is not a part of a larger complex it demonstrates interaction with endosomal components affecting cellular protein turnover rates. Recent studies highlight its role in cellular signaling contributing to the adaptation of cells to changing environmental conditions.

Pathways

SCRN1 plays an impactful role in the endocytic and lysosomal pathways. It interacts with Rab7 an important protein in these pathways which ensures efficient lysosomal function and autophagy processes. Through its action in these pathways SCRN1 influences cellular recycle of nutrients and elimination of cellular debris contributing to cellular maintenance and turnover.

SCRN1 has been linked to neurological conditions and cancer. Dysfunctional SCRN1 activity associates with neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's where the protein's impact on lysosomal degradation is disrupted. Also SCRN1 connects with proteins like amyloid precursor protein (APP) adding to the understanding of its role in these diseases. In cancer SCRN1 dysregulation may affect tumor proliferation and metastasis especially through its interactions with oncogene-related pathways.
