Component of the coat protein complex II (COPII) which promotes the formation of transport vesicles from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). The coat has two main functions, the physical deformation of the endoplasmic reticulum membrane into vesicles and the selection of cargo molecules for their transport to the Golgi complex (PubMed:17499046, PubMed:18843296, PubMed:20427317). Plays a central role in cargo selection within the COPII complex and together with SEC24A may have a different specificity compared to SEC24C and SEC24D. May package preferentially cargos with cytoplasmic DxE or LxxLE motifs and may also recognize conformational epitopes (PubMed:17499046, PubMed:18843296).

SEC24B also known as Sec24-related protein B is a component of the COPII (coat protein complex II) vesicle coat. It has a molecular mass of approximately 139 kDa. SEC24B serves as an essential element in the machinery that assists protein transport from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) to the Golgi apparatus. The protein facilitates the packaging of cargo proteins into vesicles which are small membrane-bound sacs. SEC24B is widely expressed in various tissues including the liver brain heart and kidneys.
The role of SEC24B involves facilitating selective cargo sorting in the ER-to-Golgi transport process. SEC24B is part of a larger protein complex necessary for forming COPII vesicles which are critical for exporting secretory proteins. This protein interacts with transport proteins and various cargo receptors to identify and selectively package proteins destined for the Golgi apparatus enabling the efficient sorting and delivery of proteins necessary for cellular function.
SEC24B is integral to the secretory pathway that maintains cellular protein traffic from the ER to the Golgi. It cooperates with proteins like SAR1 and SEC23 to form the prebudding complex on the ER membrane. SEC24B and these related proteins work together to mediate vesicle budding and cargo selection. Additionally SEC24B plays a part in the vesicular transport pathway which ensures proper protein localization and function within the cell.
SEC24B has associations with disorders like congenital heart defects and neural tube defects. Alterations in SEC24B’s function can impact the development and proper formation of cardiac and neural tissues. SEC24B interacts with other proteins like SEC23 which have links to the presentation of these developmental disorders highlighting its importance in cellular export pathways during development. Understanding SEC24B's roles might provide insights into potential therapeutic approaches for these conditions.
