SEC24D also known as SEC24-related protein D plays an important role in the transport of secretory proteins from the endoplasmic reticulum to the Golgi apparatus by mediating cargo selection for vesicle budding. This protein is part of the COPII coat complex. SEC24D has a molecular mass of approximately 130 kDa. It is widely expressed in most tissues with higher expression levels observed in the liver and testes. Its function in vesicular trafficking makes it essential for maintaining cellular protein transport.
Biological function summary

The protein is involved in the packaging of cargo into COPII vesicles. It operates within the COPII complex which includes proteins like SEC23 SEC13 SEC31 and SAR1. Component of the coat protein complex II (COPII) which promotes the formation of transport vesicles from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). The coat has two main functions, the physical deformation of the endoplasmic reticulum membrane into vesicles and the selection of cargo molecules for their transport to the Golgi complex (PubMed : 17499046, PubMed : 18843296, PubMed : 20427317). Plays a central role in cargo selection within the COPII complex and together with SEC24C may have a different specificity compared to SEC24A and SEC24B (PubMed : 17499046, PubMed : 18843296, PubMed : 20427317).
