Supplementary information

Sec31A also known as Secretory 31 homolog A is an important component in the process of vesicle formation within cells. It has a molecular mass of about 137 kDa. This protein primarily localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) exit sites where it plays a role in the transport of proteins. It functions in close association with the COPII (coat protein II) vesicle coat complex which is necessary for transporting proteins from the ER to the Golgi apparatus.
Biological function summary

Sec31A participates in the export of properly folded proteins from the ER. As part of the COPII complex Sec31A works with other proteins like Sec13 to form a cage-like structure encapsulating the transport vesicle. This event is important for maintaining protein homeostasis and efficient cellular operations. Sec31A's involvement ensures that proteins reach their correct destinations impacting overall cell health.

Pathways

He protein has significant involvement in the ER-to-Golgi transport pathway. In this pathway features an important interaction between Sec31A and Sar1 a small GTPase that initiates COPII assembly. The function of Sec31A is critical here as it allows the progression of cargo through the secretory pathway. This pathway is integral to many cellular processes including the proper secretion of hormones and enzymes.

Alterations and dysfunction in Sec31A have been linked to heart-related conditions and neurological disorders. Mutations in this protein can result in faulty protein transport leading to an accumulation of misfolded proteins and stress in the ER. Additionally disruptions in Sec31A activity have shown connections with the accumulation of neurodegenerative disorders. The relationship between Sec31A and Sec13 could further elucidate understanding of these conditions due to their collaborative role in vesicle formation and transport.

Target data

Component of the coat protein complex II (COPII) which promotes the formation of transport vesicles from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) (PubMed : 10788476). The coat has two main functions, the physical deformation of the endoplasmic reticulum membrane into vesicles and the selection of cargo molecules (By similarity).
