SEC31B sometimes referred to as SEC31 homolog B is a protein that functions mechanically in vesicle formation. It is a component of the coat protein complex II (COPII) which is essential for the transport of proteins from the endoplasmic reticulum to the Golgi apparatus. SEC31B has an approximate mass of 134 kDa. This protein is expressed in various tissues with notable levels observed in pancreatic and muscle tissues.
SEC31B is part of the COPII complex that operates in mediating vesicle budding and cargo selection during protein transport. Its activity is essential for maintaining the proper flow of proteins through the secretory pathway which is an integral part of cellular homeostasis. As a component of the COPII complex SEC31B interacts closely with other proteins such as SEC23 to ensure efficient vesicle transportation and regulation.
SEC31B participates in the secretory pathway and endoplasmic reticulum-to-Golgi transport. This process is vital for protein processing and trafficking within the cell.
