Supplementary information

SEL1L3 also known as suppressor of lin-12-like protein 3 is a critical component in cellular processes. This protein has a molecular mass of approximately 95 kDa. It finds expression in various tissues but shows high levels in the liver and pancreas. Its structure suggests its involvement in protein quality control particularly in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER).
Biological function summary

SEL1L3 functions in the ER-associated degradation (ERAD) pathway ensuring misfolded proteins are efficiently targeted and degraded. It may form part of a complex with other ERAD components contributing to cellular homeostasis. Through its activity SEL1L3 aids in preventing the accumulation of defective proteins which could otherwise be detrimental to cell function.

Pathways

SEL1L3 actively participates in the ERAD pathway and is associated with the ubiquitin-proteasome system. It works alongside other partners like HRD1 an important E3 ubiquitin ligase to facilitate the tagging of misfolded proteins for degradation. These cooperative interactions highlight its role in maintaining protein homeostasis within the ER linked to the regulation of protein folding and degradation.

Dysfunctional SEL1L3 has correlations with metabolic diseases such as diabetes and some liver disorders. It is connected with proteins like HRD1 which also play roles in these conditions. The impairment of SEL1L3's function can lead to the accumulation of misfolded proteins contributing to cellular stress and pathology in these diseases. A deeper understanding of SEL1L3 could improve insights into therapeutic strategies for these conditions.
