Supplementary information

Semaphorin 3c also known as Sema3C is a secreted protein that plays a role in signal transduction. It has a mass of approximately 89 kDa. Researchers find that Sema3C is expressed in various tissues including the brain lungs and heart. This protein is part of the semaphorin family which is known for guiding axonal growth during neural development. Sema3C functions through binding to neuropilin-1 and -2 receptors facilitating essential processes in cell signaling.
Biological function summary

Semaphorin 3c has several effects on cellular dynamics. It influences axonal guidance angiogenesis and cell migration. Sema3C forms part of complex interactions with receptors and cytoplasmic proteins affecting the structure and function of the cytoskeleton in developing neurons. Additionally it plays a distinct role in vascular remodeling by regulating endothelial cells and smooth muscle proliferation. These functionalities highlight its involvement in tissue morphogenesis and development.

Pathways

Semaphorin 3c is an important player in neural development and vascular-related pathways. It interacts significantly in the axon guidance pathway where it provides directionality to growing neurons. In this context proteins such as plexins and neuropilins are directly associated with Sema3C facilitating its function in axon direction guidance. Additionally it is a part of the VEGF signaling pathway affecting angiogenic processes through interactions with VEGF family members and their respective receptors.

Semaphorin 3c is notably implicated in cancer progression and cardiovascular abnormalities. Aberrant expression of Sema3C associates with several cancer types where it can influence tumor growth and metastasis. In cardiovascular disorders anomalies in Sema3C levels are linked to conditions such as atherosclerosis. It interacts with proteins like vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) contributing to pathogenesis through altered cellular proliferation and migration in affected tissues.

Target data

Binds to plexin family members and plays an important role in the regulation of developmental processes. Required for normal cardiovascular development during embryogenesis. Functions as attractant for growing axons, and thereby plays an important role in axon growth and axon guidance (By similarity).
