Supplementary information

SEPT14 also known as Septin-14 is a member of the septin family of GTP-binding proteins. It has a molecular mass of approximately 48 kDa. SEPT14 forms filamentous structures important for cell division and cytoskeletal organization. Expression of SEPT14 occurs primarily in the testis suggesting specialized functions in male reproductive organs. It may interact with other septins to facilitate cellular processes.
Biological function summary

SEPT14 assembles with other septins to form hetero-oligomeric complexes that are important for successful cytokinesis and compartmentalization of different cellular regions. It plays a role in the structural integrity of the cell acting as a scaffold for other proteins during cellular transport and morphogenesis processes. SEPT14 contributes to the maintenance of germ cell architecture which is critical for processes involved in spermatogenesis.

Pathways

SEPT14 participates in the pathways linked to the actin cytoskeleton organization and spermatogenesis. It interacts with actin filaments aligning with proteins like SEPT7 and SEPT9 which are integral parts of the cytoskeleton. SEPT14 takes part in genetic regulatory pathways and signaling mechanisms that ensure precise cell division contributing to reproductive tissue development and stability.

SEPT14 is linked to infertility particularly male infertility and has been associated with abnormal spermatogenesis. Changes in SEPT14 expression levels or mutations can disrupt normal septin function affecting cytoskeletal dynamics and cell division. These disruptions may involve proteins like SEPT4 which also play a role in male germ cell development. Understanding SEPT14's function and its interactions offers potential therapeutic targets to address reproductive health issues.

Target data

Filament-forming cytoskeletal GTPase (Probable). Involved in the migration of cortical neurons and the formation of neuron leading processes during embryonic development (By similarity). Plays a role in sperm head formation during spermiogenesis, potentially via facilitating localization of ACTN4 to cell filaments (PubMed : 33228246).
