Biological function summary
SerpinB4 plays a role in immune response regulation and protection against protease-mediated damage. It forms part of a regulatory network that controls inflammatory responses and cell death. The protein functions within a larger group of serpins involved in inhibiting distinct sets of proteases that influence processes such as apoptosis and inflammation. In keratinocytes SerpinB4 limits excessive proteolytic activity helping in response to environmental stressors and injuries.
Pathways
SerpinB4 interacts within the apoptosis and inflammatory response pathways. In the apoptosis pathway its function intersects with caspase signaling acting indirectly to counterbalance cell death signals. This protein is associated with tumor necrosis factor (TNF) pathways where it helps regulate the cascade of inflammatory cytokines. Through these interactions it shares functional pathways with other serpin proteins like SerpinB3 which also modulate inflammation and apoptosis.
