SerpinB6 also known as CAP or cytoplasmic antiproteinase functions as a serine protease inhibitor. It weighs approximately 42 kDa. This protein is specific in inhibiting intracellular serine proteases regulating proteolytic processes. SerpinB6 expresses widely across tissues with high levels noted in the extravascular regions such as kidney placenta liver and leukocytes. It serves a cellular protective role by preventing inappropriate proteolysis that could damage cells.

Biological function summary

SerpinB6 plays an important role in protecting cells from protease-dependent damage particularly in stress conditions like heat shock. It operates independently and does not integrate into multiprotein complexes sticking to its role of solo protease control. This protein helps in maintaining cellular integrity safeguarding vital intra-cellular components from degradation by serine proteases particularly during stress responses which affect survival of certain cell types.
