Supplementary information

The SFRS11 protein also known as splicing factor arginine/serine-rich 11 functions mechanically as a splicing factor involved in the regulation of pre-mRNA processing. It has a molecular mass of approximately 54 kDa. SFRS11 expresses in various tissues with higher levels in the brain and testis. This protein belongs to the serine/arginine-rich (SR) family and contains RNA recognition motifs that facilitate its interaction with target RNA sequences.
Biological function summary

This splicing factor plays an essential role in the regulation of gene expression by modulating alternative splicing events. SFRS11 can influence the inclusion or exclusion of specific RNA sequences during mRNA formation. It may work as part of a spliceosomal complex where its role in the splicing process is critical for generating diverse mRNA isoforms. This regulatory capacity impacts diverse cellular processes like cell differentiation and apoptosis.

Pathways

Splicing factors such as SFRS11 are integral to both the splicing pathway and the wider RNA processing network. Within these pathways SFRS11 interacts with other splicing proteins like SF3B1 and SRSF2 which coordinate to ensure accurate and efficient spliceosome assembly and function. These interactions contribute to the regulation of genetic expression patterns in response to cellular signals and stress conditions.

Aberrant SFRS11 function associates with certain cancers and neurodegenerative diseases. Improper alternative splicing due to SFRS11 mutations or misregulation may lead to the production of oncogenic mRNA isoforms linking it to cancer progression. Related proteins like SRPK1 a kinase regulating SR proteins including SFRS11 are often implicated in these pathologies highlighting the significance of this splicing factor in maintaining normal cellular function and preventing disease.
