Supplementary information

SFRS7 also known as SRSF7 is a member of the serine/arginine-rich family of proteins that functions as an essential splicing factor. It has a mass of approximately 27 kDa. SRSF7 shows expression in various tissues with notable presence in the nucleoplasm of cells. Mechanically SRSF7 has binding affinity for RNA sequences facilitating alternative splicing by interacting with pre-mRNA. This protein plays a significant role in post-transcriptional regulation influencing the maturation and diversity of mRNA transcripts.
Biological function summary

SRSF7 contributes to the regulation of gene expression and is involved in spliceosome formation though it is not strictly part of the spliceosomal core complex. It influences exon skipping and inclusion which affects various functional mRNA variants. SRSF7 enables cellular responses to changes in internal and external environments by altering gene expression patterns. This flexibility positions it as an important player in processes such as cell cycle regulation and apoptosis.

Pathways

SRSF7 operates within the general mRNA processing pathway and plays a part in the spliceosome pathway. SRSF7 interacts with other splicing factors like SRSF1 which promotes its functional diversity. These proteins collectively enable precise and correct splicing of mRNA which is critical in maintaining cellular homeostasis and responding to physiological changes.

Abnormalities in SRSF7 expression or function can relate to cancer and neurodegenerative disorders. Dysregulation of mRNA splicing where SRSF7 plays a role can drive oncogenic transformations in cells linking it to various forms of cancer. Also SRSF7 and splicing-related proteins such as hnRNPs are observed in dysfunctional states within neurodegenerative conditions suggesting splicing alterations contribute to disease pathogenesis. Understanding SRSF7's role allows for better comprehension of these disorders and potential therapeutic strategies.

Target data

Required for pre-mRNA splicing. Can also modulate alternative splicing in vitro. Represses the splicing of MAPT/Tau exon 10. May function as export adapter involved in mRNA nuclear export such as of histone H2A. Binds mRNA which is thought to be transferred to the NXF1-NXT1 heterodimer for export (TAP/NXF1 pathway); enhances NXF1-NXT1 RNA-binding activity. RNA-binding is semi-sequence specific.
