SGF29 also known as SAGA-associated factor 29 is a component of the SAGA (Spt-Ada-GCN5 acetyltransferase) coactivator complex which is responsible for transcriptional regulation. The SGF29 protein has a molecular mass of approximately 60 kDa. Researchers have observed its expression in various tissues though it is more prominent in the nucleus where it exerts its functional roles. SGF29 interacts with histone H3 and recognizes the H3K4me3 mark which plays an important role in recruiting other SAGA components for transcription activation.
Biological function summary

The role of SGF29 involves it in chromatin remodeling and transcriptional activation processes. It acts as a scaffold protein binding to methylated histone H3 lysine residues and helps localize the SAGA complex to chromatin sites that are marked for transcription. By attaching to these regions SGF29 facilitates the acetylation of histones a modification that leads to the relaxation of chromatin structure more accessible to transcription machinery.

Chromatin reader component of some histone acetyltransferase (HAT) SAGA-type complexes like the TFTC-HAT, ATAC or STAGA complexes (PubMed : 19103755, PubMed : 20850016, PubMed : 21685874, PubMed : 26421618, PubMed : 26578293). SGF29 specifically recognizes and binds methylated 'Lys-4' of histone H3 (H3K4me), with a preference for trimethylated form (H3K4me3) (PubMed : 20850016, PubMed : 21685874, PubMed : 26421618, PubMed : 26578293). In the SAGA-type complexes, SGF29 is required to recruit complexes to H3K4me (PubMed : 20850016). Involved in the response to endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress by recruiting the SAGA complex to H3K4me, thereby promoting histone H3 acetylation and cell survival (PubMed : 23894581). Also binds non-histone proteins that are methylated on Lys residues : specifically recognizes and binds CGAS monomethylated on 'Lys-506' (By similarity).
