Biological function summary
SGPP1 plays an important role in controlling the sphingolipid signaling pathway influencing cell growth survival and migration. It is not part of a larger complex but operates through interaction with S1P and its receptors. By removing phosphate groups from S1P SGPP1 reduces the signaling activity of this lipid mediator therefore influencing various biological responses including immune cell trafficking.
Pathways
SGPP1 functions within the sphingolipid metabolism pathway which is closely tied to the regulation of cellular processes such as proliferation and apoptosis. Its activity has a strong connection with S1P lyase which further degrades sphingosine. SGPP1 also interacts with enzymes involved in the ceramide synthesis pathway reflecting its role in balancing the levels of different sphingolipids that affect cellular functions.
