SLC6A7 also known as the Proton-dependent Amino Acid Transporter (PAT2) is a member of the solute carrier family 6. This transporter specifically facilitates the uptake of proline and other amino acids in cells working through a sodium-dependent mechanism. It has a molecular mass of approximately 76 kDa. SLC6A7 is predominantly expressed in the central nervous system with notable expression in the brain highlighting its role in neural processes.
The transporter plays a significant role in neurotransmitter regulation and modulation. By controlling the levels of amino acids within neural tissues SLC6A7 contributes to neurotransmission and synaptic plasticity. This transporter functions as part of a broader amino acid transport system that maintains cellular homeostasis within neurons ensuring proper signaling and metabolic processes.
This solute carrier is an important component of amino acid transport and metabolism pathways. It participates in the neurotransmitter cycle interacting closely with GABA and glutamate pathways which are critical for synaptic signaling in the brain.
