Target data

Function

Functions as a permease involved in the transport of the cationic amino acids (L-arginine, L-lysine, L-ornithine and L-homoarginine); the affinity for its substrates differs between isoforms created by alternative splicing (PubMed:28684763, PubMed:9174363). May play a role in classical or alternative activation of macrophages via its role in arginine transport (By similarity). Isoform 1. Functions as a permease that mediates the transport of the cationic amino acids (L-arginine, L-lysine, L-ornithine and L-homoarginine). Shows a much higher affinity for L-arginine and L-homoarginine than isoform 2. Isoform 2. Functions as a low-affinity, high capacity permease involved in the transport of the cationic amino acids (L-arginine, L-lysine, L-ornithine and L-homoarginine).

Activity summary

SLC7A2 commonly known as CAT2 functions as a cationic amino acid transporter. This protein weighs around 72 kDa and is essential for the uptake of cationic amino acids such as arginine lysine and ornithine. Expression of SLC7A2 happens in various tissues including liver kidney and skeletal muscle. It is a member of the larger solute carrier family specifically the SLC7 family which plays roles in transporting nutrients across the cell membrane.

Biological function summary

SLC7A2 contributes to the regulation of nitric oxide production by modulating the intracellular availability of arginine an important substrate for nitric oxide synthase. The protein does not appear to work as a part of a well-characterized complex but its independent activity can significantly influence cellular functions. By impacting arginine transport SLC7A2 affects various cellular processes like immune response and vascular function.

Pathways

SLC7A2 serves a role in the nitric oxide synthesis pathway and the urea cycle. It interacts indirectly with proteins such as nitric oxide synthase which requires arginine supplied by SLC7A2 for nitric oxide production. SLC7A2 influences pathways like vasodilation and immune signaling by controlling the movement and availability of its substrate amino acids.

Associated diseases and disorders

Misregulation or mutation of SLC7A2 links to hypertensive disorders and certain metabolic syndromes. The protein's role in arginine transport connects to situations such as endothelial dysfunction where reduced nitric oxide levels lead to cardiovascular issues. Researchers study its relationship with nitric oxide synthase further to understand the mechanistic basis of these health conditions.
