Biological function summary
This transporter facilitates the uptake of thyroid hormones such as thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) into the brain. Thyroid hormones are critical for brain development and function and SLCO1C1 plays a significant role in regulating their levels in the central nervous system. It does not work alone interacting with other proteins like thyroid hormone receptors to ensure proper hormone signaling in neuronal tissues.
Pathways
Thyroid hormone transport involves SLCO1C1 as well as its engagement with hormonal signaling pathways. These pathways include the regulation of metabolic processes and neural development which are essential for normal physiological function. SLCO1C1 also interacts with proteins such as MCT8 another thyroid hormone transporter integrating thyroid hormone distribution into the broader metabolic network within the brain.
