SNRPD1 also known as Sm-D1 or Small Nuclear Ribonucleoprotein D1 is a protein that functions as part of the spliceosome complex. This protein with a molecular mass of approximately 13 kDa contributes to the assembly and function of the spliceosome. SNRPD1 is highly expressed in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells where it interacts with other spliceosomal components to carry out RNA splicing processes.
Biological function summary

SNRPD1 plays a critical role in the splicing of pre-mRNA as part of the small nuclear ribonucleoprotein (snRNP) core complex. It specifically binds to small nuclear RNA (snRNA) molecules aiding in the formation and stabilization of the snRNP structure. Through this activity SNRPD1 cooperates with other snRNPs to facilitate the removal of introns from pre-mRNA a necessary step in the synthesis of mature and functional mRNA transcripts.

Pathways

SNRPD1 engages in the spliceosome pathway which involves the precise removal of non-coding sequences from RNA transcripts. SNRPD1 is closely associated with proteins such as SNRPB and SNRPC which are integral components of the same snRNP complex. Its involvement in the spliceosome pathway highlights its important role in the regulation of gene expression and RNA processing within the cell.

Alterations in SNRPD1 function have been implicated in certain types of cancer including breast cancer by impacting mRNA splicing. In this context SNRPD1 may interact with oncogenic factors and other spliceosome-associated proteins like SF3B1 which also modulate spliceosome activity. Additionally mutations or dysregulation of SNRPD1 have associations with autoimmune conditions such as systemic lupus erythematosus where the immune system may target spliceosome components disrupting normal cellular functions.

Target data

Plays a role in pre-mRNA splicing as a core component of the spliceosomal U1, U2, U4 and U5 small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs), the building blocks of the spliceosome (PubMed : 11991638, PubMed : 18984161, PubMed : 19325628, PubMed : 23333303, PubMed : 25555158, PubMed : 26912367, PubMed : 28076346, PubMed : 28502770, PubMed : 28781166, PubMed : 32494006). Component of both the pre-catalytic spliceosome B complex and activated spliceosome C complexes (PubMed : 11991638, PubMed : 26912367, PubMed : 28076346, PubMed : 28502770, PubMed : 28781166). As a component of the minor spliceosome, involved in the splicing of U12-type introns in pre-mRNAs (PubMed : 15146077). May act as a charged protein scaffold to promote snRNP assembly or strengthen snRNP-snRNP interactions through non-specific electrostatic contacts with RNA (PubMed : 23333303).
