Solute carrier family 22 member 18 (SLC22A18) also known as BWR1A is a transporter protein that plays a role in moving organic cations across cell membranes. It is a member of the solute carrier family 22 which includes several transporters that facilitate the movement of various molecules. The molecular mass of SLC22A18 is approximately 61 kDa. It is mostly expressed in tissues such as the kidney placenta and liver where it contributes to the regulation of extracellular and intracellular concentrations of organic ions.
SLC22A18 functions in the uptake and extrusion of organic cations impacting cellular homeostasis and metabolism. It is not part of a complex but instead works individually within the cells. This protein helps in maintaining the balance of metabolites and xenobiotics substances foreign to an organism's body influencing processes including detoxification and metabolic regulation.
SLC22A18 participates in the organic cation transport pathway and the xenobiotic metabolism pathway. It is related to proteins in these pathways such as other solute carriers which together maintain the transport of various cations and metabolites across cellular membranes. This action assists various cells in handling foreign substances by regulating their uptake and excretion to adapt to various internal and external environments.
SLC22A18 has associations with cancer and metabolic syndrome.
