Supplementary information

SPERT also known as sperm-associated antigen 9 (SPAG9) weighs approximately 40 kDa. This protein mainly finds expression in testis tissue but also appears in other tissues like breast and prostate albeit at lower levels. SPERT localizes in the cytoplasm and nucleus of cells suggesting its role in various cellular processes.
Biological function summary

SPERT interacts with components critical for spermatogenesis and fertilization processes. It forms part of a protein complex that regulates specific functions during sperm development. Through its associations SPERT influences microtubule binding and possibly affects the integrity and motility of sperm cells. These functions highlight its important role in male fertility.

Pathways

Researchers connect SPERT to the JNK signaling pathway which regulates stress responses and apoptosis. In this context SPERT modulates interactions with proteins like c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNKs) playing a role in cell survival and apoptosis. SPERT’s involvement in regulating kinase activity links it to MAPK pathways which further emphasize its influence on cellular growth and differentiation.

SPERT has been implicated in certain reproductive disorders such as male infertility. Abnormal expression or mutations in SPERT may impact sperm function linked to disrupted spermatogenesis. Additionally irregular SPERT expression correlates with breast cancer possibly through its interactions affecting cellular pathways driven by JNK and MAPK proteins. Understanding these links helps recognize SPERT's role in pathological conditions and may guide future therapeutic strategies.
