Spir-1 also known as SPIR1 is a protein that functions as an actin nucleator. Its molecular mass is approximately 82 kDa. Spir-1 polymerizes actin by initiating the formation of new actin filaments. It has a role in controlling cytoskeletal dynamics important for cellular structure and movement. Spir-1 is expressed in a variety of human tissues including the brain where it shows particular activity in embryonic and neural tissues. These actin-modulating properties contribute to its regulation of cellular processes fundamental for organismal development.
Biological function summary

Spir-1 influences the organization of the actin cytoskeleton acting as an important factor in cellular motility and shape determination. It forms a complex with other actin-related proteins such as the formin protein family. This complex enables Spir-1 to work efficiently in actin polymerization ensuring the proper assembly of actin filaments. Involved in intracellular vesicle transport along actin fibers, providing a novel link between actin cytoskeleton dynamics and intracellular transport (PubMed : 11747823).
