Function

Serine/arginine-rich protein-specific kinase which specifically phosphorylates its substrates at serine residues located in regions rich in arginine/serine dipeptides, known as RS domains. Phosphorylates the SR splicing factor SRSF1 and the lamin-B receptor (LBR) in vitro. Required for normal muscle development (By similarity).

Activity summary

STK23 also known as Serine/Threonine Kinase 23 functions as an active kinase that phosphorylates substrates on serine and threonine residues. This kinase has a molecular mass of approximately 36 kDa. It presents prominently in tissues such as the brain and kidney. STK23's sequence and structure classify it in the kinase family which are key regulators of various cellular processes.

Biological function summary

This kinase plays essential roles in cell cycle regulation and signal transduction. It operates as a single protein and is not part of a larger protein complex. In the context of cellular activities STK23 aids in controlling processes such as mitosis highlighting its significance in maintaining proper cell function.

Pathways

STK23 directly influences the MAPK signaling pathway and is involved in the cell cycle regulation pathway. Through these pathways it interacts with proteins like ERK and other kinases contributing to cell proliferation and differentiation. These interactions place STK23 among the important regulators in cellular growth processes.

Associated diseases and disorders

Anomalies in STK23 activity connect to cancer and neurological disorders. Its dysregulation has been observed in certain cancers where kinase activity might be upregulated leading to increased cell division. In the context of neurological disorders alterations in STK23 might influence neuron function or viability. In these diseases STK23 shares cofactors or pathways with proteins like CDK for its role in cell cycle dysregulation linking it to pathologies.
