Stathmin 3 also known as STMN3 is a microtubule-destabilizing protein with a molecular mass of approximately 18 kDa. The protein plays a mechanical role in the regulation of the microtubule network by promoting microtubule depolymerization which is essential for cellular processes involving microtubule dynamics. STMN3 is prominently expressed in neural tissues and contributes to the regulation of the cytoskeleton during neuron development and differentiation.
The regulation of microtubule dynamics through STMN3 affects neuronal growth and synaptic plasticity which are key for brain function. STMN3 does not operate as part of a large protein complex like some other microtubule-associated proteins but its activity is modulated by phosphorylation states that influence its ability to bind to tubulin and destabilize microtubules.
Several processes involving STMN3 include the cellular cytoskeleton organization and neural cell signaling pathways. The protein's function is closely tied to the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway which modulates its activity through phosphorylation. STMN3 interacts with tubulin subunits impacting microtubule dynamics that in turn influence cell signaling and transport processes within neurons.
Dysregulation of STMN3 has connections to neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia. Alterations in STMN3 expression or function can affect microtubule stability and neuronal function which contribute to the pathophysiology of these conditions. Related proteins like tau in Alzheimer's disease also interact with microtubules and abnormal modifications can lead to compromised neuronal integrity and function.
