Syndecan 3 also known as N-syndecan is a heparan sulfate proteoglycan with a molecular mass of around 120-150 kDa. It has a core protein containing three heparan sulfate chains essential for its function. Expressed mainly in the nervous system Syndecan 3 shows significant concentration in neurons and glial cells. This proteoglycan plays an important role in cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions and contributes to neural developmental processes.
Biological function summary

Syndecan 3 modulates cellular behaviors including proliferation differentiation and migration. It functions as a co-receptor for various growth factors and adhesion molecules. This interaction facilitates signaling pathways that influence neural structure and function. Syndecan 3 forms complexes with other cell surface molecules which enhance its ability to mediate cellular responses. These interactions are essential for the development and maintenance of the nervous system.

Pathways

Syndecan 3 interacts within important signaling cascades such as the Wnt and fibroblast growth factor (FGF) pathways. The Wnt pathway involves the regulation of gene expression critical for cellular processes while FGF pathways direct cell division and differentiation. Syndecan 3's interaction with proteins like FGF receptors highlights its role in these pathways. It aids in modulating the activity of related proteins coordinating integrative signals that ensure proper neuronal development.

Syndecan 3 relates to neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer's Disease and developmental disorders such as autism. In Alzheimer's Disease its association with amyloid beta precursor protein (APP) suggests a role in amyloid plaque formation. In autism changes in the expression of Syndecan 3 may influence neural connectivity and communication. These interactions emphasize the importance of Syndecan 3 in maintaining neuronal integrity and highlight its potential as a therapeutic target.

Target data

Cell surface proteoglycan that may bear heparan sulfate (By similarity). May have a role in the organization of cell shape by affecting the actin cytoskeleton, possibly by transferring signals from the cell surface in a sugar-dependent mechanism.
