TDH also known as trehalose-6-phosphate phosphatase plays an important role in the trehalose biosynthesis pathway by catalyzing the dephosphorylation of trehalose-6-phosphate to trehalose. This enzyme has a mass of approximately 33 kDa and is widely expressed in various tissues including the brain liver and kidney. Its activity is important for regulating trehalose levels an essential disaccharide for energy storage and stress response in organisms.
Trehalose-6-phosphate phosphatase contributes significantly to cellular energy management and stress responses. In many organisms it forms part of a larger complex involved in carbohydrate metabolism. It directly impacts trehalose production which helps protect cells under osmotic and oxidative stress conditions. Through its enzymatic action TDH ensures adequate trehalose availability maintaining cellular homeostasis.
TDH plays an integral role in the carbohydrate metabolism and stress response pathways. It associates with proteins such as trehalose synthase in the trehalose biosynthesis pathway influencing glucose metabolism. Additionally through interactions in the stress response pathway TDH can modulate the activity of proteins coordinating cellular survival under adverse conditions.
Imbalances and mutations in the function of TDH link to metabolic disorders such as Diabetes Mellitus and certain neurodegenerative diseases. In the context of diabetes the enzyme's role in glucose homeostasis becomes disrupted affecting insulin signaling. Moreover its interaction with proteins like AMPK in neurodegenerative diseases suggests its participation in cellular energy regulation and protection against cell damage.
