Supplementary information

TDU also known as Target Discovery Unit is a protein with a molecular mass of approximately 45 kDa. TDU is known for its role in cellular processes by mechanically interacting with cell signaling pathways. The protein is expressed mostly in the liver and brain but is also present in lower levels in other tissues. TDU goes by alternate names such as TranDucer Unit and operates as an integral component of cellular machinery.
Biological function summary

The mechanism by which TDU contributes to cellular function involves modulation of signal transduction pathways. TDU acts as a scaffolding protein providing a docking site for various signaling molecules. It is known to form complexes with kinases which are pivotal for regulating cell growth and differentiation. The interaction of TDU with these kinases facilitates their proper positioning and activity within the cell influencing downstream effects.

Pathways

The role of TDU is significant in both the MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase) and PI3K/AKT signaling pathways. These pathways are essential for cell survival and proliferation. TDU modulates these processes by interacting directly with proteins such as MEK1 and AKT1. In its capacity within these pathways TDU ensures responsiveness to extracellular signals and maintains homeostasis by being a central hub in the signal transduction network.

Researchers have linked TDU to various liver diseases and neurological disorders. Increased or decreased expression of TDU has implications in conditions such as liver fibrosis and Alzheimer's disease. In the context of liver fibrosis the interaction of TDU with TGF-beta signaling proteins contributes to pathological changes. Similarly in Alzheimer's disease TDU's modulation of tau pathology highlights its potential as a therapeutic target.
