Biological function summary
Tetanus toxoid stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies against the active tetanus toxin tetanospasmin. It doesn't form part of any specific protein complexes but functions independently to evoke humoral immunity. The binding of these antibodies to tetanospasmin neutralizes its effect thereby preventing the inhibition of neurotransmitter release. This process is important for avoiding the spasms and muscle rigidity associated with tetanus. The immune response it provokes includes the activation of B cells which differentiate into plasma cells that produce anti-tetanus antibodies.
Pathways
Tetanus toxoid plays an integral part in the adaptive immune response. It functions within the humoral immune pathway by stimulating the Th2 response. This activation is associated with B-cell proliferation and differentiation into antibody-secreting cells which provide long-term immunity. The vaccine-related immune response connects to key immunological proteins like CD4+ T-helper cells which play a central role in modulating the immune system's response to vaccines.
