Supplementary information

Thymosin alpha 1 also known as Tα1 is a peptide with a molecular weight of approximately 3108 Daltons. It is expressed within the thymus an organ critical for T cell maturation. Structurally Tα1 consists of 28 amino acid residues and functions through interactions with the immune cells. As a result it engages in various roles to stimulate immune responses and bolster the body's defense mechanisms against pathogens.
Biological function summary

Thymosin alpha 1 stimulates the maturation and differentiation of T cells central players in the adaptive immune response. It organizes these cells to enhance their capability to recognize antigens and react to infections or abnormal cells. Thymosin alpha 1 does not form part of any known larger complexes but independently precipitates a cascade of immune-related activities. These actions establish thymosin alpha 1 as an important regulatory molecule in the immune system.

Pathways

The biological function of thymosin alpha 1 is integrated into the immune response pathways. It is notably involved in the T cell receptor signaling pathway contributing to the activation and proliferation of T cells. Thymosin alpha 1 associates closely with proteins such as interleukin-2 and interferon-alpha which are critical to these immune pathways. Together these molecules reinforce the immune defense by promoting cell-mediated immunity in the presence of antigens.

Thymosin alpha 1 shows relevance to infectious diseases including hepatitis B and C where it supports antiviral responses. It also displays therapeutic potential in cancer treatment enhancing the efficacy of certain therapies. Moreover thymosin alpha 1 interacts with proteins like interleukin-2 in these disease contexts working to improve immune surveillance and control malignant cell growth and viral spread.
