The protein TRAX also known as Translin-associated factor X functions mechanically as an RNA-binding protein. It plays a role in binding to specific RNA sequences and is involved in RNA transport and stability. The protein has an approximate molecular weight of 31 kDa. TRAX is expressed in various tissues including brain testis and hematopoietic tissues indicating its involvement in diverse biological processes.
TRAX interacts with Translin to form a heteromeric complex that is involved in mRNA regulation. The complex participates in the regulation of neural development and synaptic plasticity by stabilizing mRNA and modulating its translation. TRAX’s involvement in RNA processing suggests it may have implications in cellular growth and response to stress.
TRAX participates in the RNA regulatory network including the MAPK signaling pathway. It influences stress responses and cell survival by associating with proteins like Translin. This pathway coordination ensures cells can adapt to environmental changes efficiently important in maintaining neuronal health.
TRAX has links to neurodegenerative diseases and certain cancers. Alterations in TRAX expression or function can contribute to conditions such as schizophrenia. Its interaction with proteins in disease contexts including Translin suggests that misregulation of the TRAX-Translin complex may play a role in the pathology by impairing RNA transport and stability disrupting cellular functions.
