UCHL4 also known as Ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase L4 is a deubiquitinating enzyme with a mass of approximately 63 kDa. This protein is part of the ubiquitin-proteasome system which is vital in regulating protein degradation and turnover inside cells. UCHL4 is widely expressed in various tissues including the brain where it is involved in the processing of ubiquitinated proteins. As a hydrolase UCHL4 specifically removes ubiquitin from ubiquitinated protein substrates impacting protein stability and activity.

Biological function summary

Deubiquitinating enzymes like UCHL4 play a role in maintaining cellular homeostasis by regulating the levels of proteins targeted for degradation. UCHL4 associates with other proteins to form complexes involved in the recycling of ubiquitin a process essential for protein quality control.
