Biological function summary
UGT1A4 functions in the detoxification and metabolism of various endogenous and exogenous compounds. It is not a part of a complex. It primarily metabolizes drugs such as antipsychotics and anticonvulsants moving them towards elimination from the body. UGT1A4 facilitates the detoxification of hormones like bile acids and steroid hormones by making them more hydrophilic.
Pathways
UGT1A4 participates in the glucuronidation pathway an important phase II metabolism pathway. This pathway is essential for the clearance of drugs and xenobiotic compounds. UGT1A4 interacts with other UDP-glucuronosyltransferase family members contributing to the complex network of detoxification pathways. It often works alongside cytochrome P450 enzymes which are important for the preceding phase I metabolism.
