Upstream Binding Protein 1 (UBP1) also known as HNF4α-stimulating factor (HSF) acts as a transcription factor involved in the regulation of gene expression. With a molecular weight of about 67 kDa UBP1 recognizes and binds to specific DNA sequences in the promoter regions of various genes mediating the transcription process. It is expressed in several tissues including the liver and heart where it plays a critical role in modulating the activity of target genes involved in metabolic and developmental pathways.
Biological function summary

UBP1 is important for facilitating RNA polymerase II-driven transcription by aiding in the formation of transcription complexes. It contributes to chromatin remodeling which promotes gene expression changes necessary for cellular functions. UBP1 interacts as part of larger multi-protein complexes recruiting other transcription factors and co-regulators to enhance or repress gene expression which directly impacts cellular growth and differentiation processes.

Pathways

UBP1 interacts within the Wnt signaling and PI3K-Akt pathways both of which are essential for regulating cell proliferation differentiation and survival. In the Wnt pathway UBP1 modulates the expression of genes required for normal cellular communication and fate determination. It also interacts with proteins such as β-catenin in the Wnt pathway and serves as a convergence point with other transcription factors influencing the expression of genes involved in cell cycle regulation and apoptosis.

UBP1 has a connection to metabolic syndromes like non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and cardiovascular diseases. Dysregulation of UBP1 leads to abnormal expression of genes that contribute to lipid and glucose metabolism linking it closely to metabolic imbalances observed in NAFLD. Additionally altered interactions between UBP1 and transcription regulators like PPARα can intensify inflammatory responses and oxidative stress exacerbating cardiovascular disease conditions.
