UDP-xylose synthase 1 also known as UXS-1 plays a role in converting UDP-glucuronic acid to UDP-xylose. This enzyme has a molecular mass of approximately 53 kDa. It is expressed in a variety of tissues but most notably in plant cells where it contributes to cell wall biosynthesis. Alternate names for UXS-1 include UDP-glucuronate decarboxylase. UXS-1 directs the synthesis of nucleotide sugar substrates necessary for glycosylation processes.
UDP-xylose synthase 1 is important for the biosynthesis of glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans which are vital structural components in plant cells. UXS-1 participates in the early steps of polysaccharide assembly essential for plant cell wall formation. This enzyme operates often as part of a larger complex that ensures the proper supply of xylose for emergent cellular needs. Through its enzymatic activity it facilitates important steps in the cell's utilization of carbohydrate substrates.
UXS-1 is integral to the xylose biosynthetic pathway. This pathway influences the production of hemicellulose an important element of plant cell walls. In this context UXS-1 acts alongside other enzymes such as UDP-glucuronic acid decarboxylases to ensure proper polysaccharide formation.
