WEE2 also known as WEE kinase homolog 2 or oocyte-specific serine/threonine-protein kinase is a protein expressed mainly in oocytes. It has a mass of approximately 58 kDa. WEE2 functions as a cell cycle regulator that has a significant role in controlling the progression of cells through mitosis. The protein achieves this by phosphorylating and inactivating cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs) specifically CDK1 which is necessary for cell cycle progression. This regulatory mechanism ensures proper timing and coordination during the cell cycle.
Biological function summary

The regulation of oocyte meiotic arrest and maturation involves WEE2. This protein is a part of regulatory complexes known to maintain oocytes in meiotic prophase arrest until hormonal cues signal resumption of the cell cycle. Proper function of WEE2 is vital for the maintenance of genomic integrity and viability of the oocyte. By controlling entry into M-phase WEE2 provides a safeguard against premature oocyte maturation ensuring that only developmentally ready oocytes proceed through meiosis.

Oocyte-specific protein tyrosine kinase that phosphorylates and inhibits CDK1/CDC2 and acts as a key regulator of meiosis during both prophase I and metaphase II (PubMed : 29606300). Required to maintain meiotic arrest in oocytes during the germinal vesicle (GV) stage, a long period of quiescence at dictyate prophase I, by phosphorylating CDK1 at 'Tyr-15', leading to inhibit CDK1 activity and prevent meiotic reentry. Also required for metaphase II exit during egg activation by phosphorylating CDK1 at 'Tyr-15', to ensure exit from meiosis in oocytes and promote pronuclear formation (By similarity).
